About Dimebolin dihydrochloride (brand name Dimebon): Dimebon is a histamine H1 receptor antagonist that has been used clinically in Russia as antihistaminergic drug since 1983. Recently it has been shown to inhibit brain cell death in preclinical studies of Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s disease, making it a potential treatment for these and other neurodegenerative diseases. It appears to operate through multiple mechanisms of action, e.g. blocking the action of neurotoxic beta-amyloid proteins, inhibiting L-type calcium channels and modulating the action of AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors.
